Nice quick trip to Mittry Lake with Suzanne; the afternoon spent at home.

Black Saddlebags
20 Sep 2003

Suzanne, Gaby, and I left shortly after 6:00am for Mittry Lake.  We saw fewer warblers than last week, but did get Nashville & plenty of Orange-crowneds.  Least Bitterns were still plentiful, and we heard several Virginia Rails & one Sora.  Black Saddlebag dragonflies were everywhere.

Flame Skimmer

At Hidden Shores RV Resort we found the Vermilion Flycatcher and a couple of Western Meadowlarks that we missed last week.  After getting some ice cream, we found this beautiful male Flame Skimmer behind Imperial Dam.

At the desilting ponds we saw a Bank Swallow and a few duck species.  On the way home we ran into this small herd of friendly male burros.  Gaby even petted one!

Zone-tailed Hawk, 20 Sep 2003

We got home around 11:00am, and while working in the yard added a number of other birds:  Bronzed Cowbird, Black-chinned Hummingbird, and a first for our yard--a Zone-tailed Hawk.

This juvenile made his appearance known when I saw dozens of birds erupt from our huge cottonwood tree in the back yard.  I saw a black bird that looked like a Turkey Vulture, and then realized what it was!

Zone-tailed Hawk
Yuma, 20 Sep 2003

It was a juvenile, with fine barring on the wings and tail.  I called out Suzanne, and we watched it hover/hunt over our yard for a few seconds, finding no easy prey, and then soar off to the north.

Sometimes it pays to stay at home.  It's only the second Zone-tailed Hawk I've seen over Yuma, so we were happy to have seen and photographed it!
